Former distribution: As now. Present distribution: Senegal east to Ethiopia, south through Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda-Burundi, Zaire, Malawi, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique; South Africa: Transvaal, Kwazulu, eastern Botswana and north-eastern Namibia. Behaviour: Preferred habitat: watered savanna and forest areas; they live singly and are activ predominantly at night; prey includes small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, fruits, and grass; predators include hyenas, pythons and eagles. Population status: Stable. Brief notes: Body weight: 15-20 kg Head and body length: 80-95 cm Tail length: 40-55 cm Shoulder height: 35-40 cm Gestation period: 65-82 days Maximum age: 14 years in captivity Hunting methods: With dogs and traps.
