Former distribution: India and Ceylon. Present distribution: India, Ceylon and southern Nepal. Introduced to Argentina, the Hawaian Islands, Texas, California (USA), Brioni in Yugoslavia and also to the mainland, Queensland in Australia, Brasil and Uruguay. Behaviour: Preferred habitat: open landscapes with good cover in hills and lowlands, mostly diurnal; they browse and graze; gregarious and form herds up to more than 100. The rut takes place during late April and the beginning of May. Predators include tigers, leopards and dholes. Population status: Stable everywhere, except some distribution areas in Northern India.
