Former distribution: Celebes, Sulawesi, Togian Islands, Sula Islands, Buru Islands. Present distribution: As formerly. Behaviour: Preferred habitat: rain forests; they feed by day, also at twilight - mostly on fruits, foliage and larvae: living singly or in family groups. Predators are dogs. Population status: Probably endangered. Brief notes: Body weight: up to 90 kg Head and body length: 80-110 cm Tail length: 25-35 cm Shoulder height: No records Gestation period: 125-150 days Maximum age: Up to 24 years Trophy: Tusk Record RW’s: 17", 1903 Celebes, H. VAN SON; average 8". Hunting methods: By natives with dogs and pits. Remarks: Babirusas are officially protected, but still hunted for meat. Adequate protection is granted only in national parks.
